Being a Travel Professional is a lot of fun and very rewarding. It is also a lot of hard work, long hours, phone calls, and emails at all times of the day. Here are some frequently asked questions to help you see if this is the right career for you.
How many hours will I need to work?
This is a job that can be done full-time or part-time. However, it does take a weekly commitment to make sure you are giving enough attention to your business for it to grow. We recommend spending a minimum of 20 hours a week to help your business thrive.
How long will it take to make a business out of this?
If you are coming into this career brand new, you can expect it to take at least 6 to 12 months to begin receiving an income. It takes time to gather clients and then time for them to travel. If you already have a client list, you might be able to see results faster.
How do Travel Professionals get paid?
Unlike many retail positions, Travel Professionals do not get paid until AFTER the client has returned from their trip. We put many hours into their vacation before we see the financial benefit from it. In this position, you will be an independent contractor, not an employee. You will have your own business and will be paid based on the commissions you earn.
What if I have no Travel Professional experience?
One of the things we love is to help others grow their business, and we are pretty good teachers too! With Born for Travel, we provide professional development to get you started. We will show you the basics of how to run a travel business and how to sell your specialty destinations, as well as give you access to training by approved suppliers.
How much does it cost?
Since you will be an independent contractor there are some fees associated with running your business. They are not very expensive and we will discuss them when we interview.
Will I be able to travel for free?
One of the biggest misconceptions is that Travel Professionals get free travel. They do… sometimes. Most of the time when we travel we are doing it because we love to travel and we pay for it ourselves. Sometimes, high-yielding travel professionals will have access to lower fares through certain suppliers. Occasionally there will be free trips, but there will always be sales goals attached to them. Free travel can be done with a very good business model. We would love to help you achieve that goal!
